On Wednesday 25th January 2017, eight Year 6 pupils attended the Plymouth Indoor Rowing Championships at Plymstock School. Brooke, Bonnie, Denver, Alfie, Harry, Skyla, Hollie and Joshua took part in individual two minute distances races and boy/girl team races. They all did an amazing job of representing Beechwood. They were involved in some exciting races with neck and neck finishes!

They narrowly missed a medal position but made the other teams work extremely hard for their victories. In the overall standings for the day, Beechwood bested half of the other teams in the races. Well done Beechwood rowers!

EFL Community Cup @ GOALs – Monday 16th January 2017

Beechwood’s footballers had an eventful day at GOALs when they took part in the EFL Community Cup. Competing in a tough group, Beechwood were up against Montpellier, Manadon Vale, Pomphlett and Compton. Three defeats were eventually followed by a well deserved and amazing 5-4 victory over Pomphlett, with 3 goals from Aiden and 2 from T-Jay. Unfortunately, this great victory was not enough to ensure progress to the semi-finals. Well done for your efforts.  Mr Mitchell

On Friday 25th November, twelve Year 1 children from Ladybird and Robin Class were chosen to attend a multi skills event with a variety of other local schools at Sir John Hunt. The PE students at the College demonstrated a variety of different skills in a series of games which all the children participated in.  As the children moved around the different stations they practised balancing, throwing and catching a ball, tennis and football skills and even played a game involving human skittles. All the children involved were a credit to the school and had lots of fun at the event!

From Monday 21st to Friday 25th November Year 5 took part in 'bikeability' sessions to learn how to ride a bike safely, including performing bike checks. Despite the torrential rain at the beginning of the week they bravely faced the elements and the instructors reported they all listened and behaved well. They will receive their certificates and badges in assembly. We hope to see children putting their newly learnt skills to use by riding their bikes to and from school! Year 5 Team.

On Monday 21st November, Reception and Year 1 children were visited by City of Plymouth Trampoline and Gymnastics Club. Children were assessed in several disciplines including speed, agility, flexibility, strength and body control. The club is looking to select 150 students from schools across the city to attend a further trial. The top 50 children from these trials are invited to be included in their future stars programme, in which they will nurture their talent up to FIG level in gymnastics or trampoline.

On Thursday 20th October a team of Year 5 and 6 girls and boys took part in Plymouth cross country race. It was a lovely sunny afternoon - perfect running conditions. The children put in a lot of effort on the challenging course. All positions were respectable. Special mention to Terry A who displayed amazing sportsmanship. Well done all!

Bronze Ambassador Conference @ Plymouth Life Centre – (12/10/16)

Jayden, Bradley, Alfie and Josh, from Years 5 and 6 at Beechwood attended a Sports Leaders Conference at the Life Centre. The afternoon began with an inspirational talk from Olympic Hockey Gold Medalist Giselle Ansley, who then joined us for a photo and signed some autographs. Beechwood then joined up with children from other schools and took part in 2 workshops. First they took part in activities looking at the attributes and skills required to become a Sports Leader. Next they had the opportunity to plan and lead a sports activity with a small group. Our Sports Leaders can now bring these skills back to school and hopefully organise their own sporting activities.

What a promising start to the football season. Hosts Beechwood,  welcomed another 6 schools including Oakwood and Weston Mill on Tuesday afternoon to complete the first part of the academic council league fixtures. Beechwood's A team were defending their league title they won last season. We began with a 1-0 win against Woodfield (Aidan). This was followed by a nail biting 0-0 draw against our rivals Oakwood. We finished the afternoon with a 1-1 draw against Mary Deans (Aidan)). Thanks to all the teams for taking part and for lots of support from parents. Well done Beechwood!

For the first time Oakwood and Beechwood sent teams to compete in an inclusive Boccia festival at Tor Bridge High.  Teams of three sit and roll soft balls towards a target ball, similar to bowls.  Both schools won many matches and really enjoyed the event.

Friday 11th December 2015 – Another fantastic afternoon of Boccia at Tor Bridge High. 9 teams from Primary schools all over Plymouth came along to take part in our relaxed and friendly competition. It was great to see a few of our regular attendees back again as well as some new teams with some children that had never played before. The young leaders from Tor Bridge High did an incredible job of teaching them how to play and then running all of the games. Congratulations to St. Andrews, Oakwood, Beechwood, Keyham Barton, Dunstone, Leigham and Cann Bridge (who were sporting some very festive jumpers) who all came along today and took part. I hope you all had a great time and I look forward to seeing you all at our next one in the new year. Thank you to all the staff and volunteers for bringing your teams along and a huge thank you to the leaders from Tor Bridge High – I couldn’t do it without your support.

Beechwood sweated and strained around the fields of Staddiscombe and rose to the challenge of the long distance run. The weather was mild and, unusually, dry for this event which made it all the more enjoyable. Well done everyone for an outstanding show of sportsmanship and support which saw Henry cross the line to huge applause. A huge well done to all of Beechwood school cross country team for participating in the event and keeping team spirit high all afternoon! Results are available at this link:

KS1 GYMNASTICS (20/09/15)

On Wednesday KS1 experienced a fun filled gymnastics session. The children took part in stretching, jumping, rolling and strength exercises. The session was thoroughly enjoyed by all of the children and the adults were impressed by the level of gymnastic talent! The KS1 team would like to say a huge thank you to our visitors and a massive well done to the children for taking part! Some children will be offered the chance to receive further coaching outside of school.

In June we will be taking two Go Karts to Newquay Airport to compete in ‘Greenpower’s Go Kart Race’ alongside over 60 other primary schools across the southwest.

To be continued........

On Wednesday Year 6 travelled to Newquay to take part in the Greenpower Regional Qualification Go Kart Race. After an interesting start, attempting to load three Go Karts onto a coach, they had a fantastic day!

The children took part in a slalom, drag and sprint race during the day. As always, the children demonstrated exemplary behaviour and represented the school well.

On Wednesday 17th June, 18 athletes from Beechwood were selected to take part in the annual athletics event at Brickfields. The children took part in a variety of track and field events. The weather stayed dry, behaviour was fantastic and the children had a great day. Well done!
