Year 1 - Chaffinch

Welcome to Chaffinch Class

Our Teacher is Mrs Brian, our Teaching Assistant is Miss West and Mrs Delafield helps us too!

For the Autumn Term 1 we have so many exciting topics for the children, focussing on the topic ‘amazing me’ including:

  • Animals and humans: drawing and labelling key parts of the human body and knowing all about our sense.
  • Writing sentences using capital letters, full stops and adjectives. Writing captions, labels and lists and reading familiar stories such as ‘Topsy and Tim’ and ‘Biff, Chip and Kipper.’
  • Measuring our bodies and body parts accurately using rulers and tape measures.
  • Learning about a healthy and varied diet. We will then use this knowledge to prepare our own healthy food dish!
  • Creating a family tree.
  • Drawing a self-portrait.

For the Autumn Term 2 we have so much exciting topics for the children focussing on the topic ‘weather watchers’ including:

  • Seasons: name and describe the four seasons, use a rain gauge to monitor rainfall and use a thermometer to measure temperature.
  • Writing a set of instructions on how to make a rain gauge. Also writing a poem al about the weather.
  • Measure rain fall accurately using cylinders and measuring jugs.
  • Use a computer to create a seasonal picture.
  • Design and make our own rain gauge from recycled materials.

Physical activity sessions will be held weekly on a Friday Morning. Children will be getting changed for PE in school, please ensure PE kits are labelled.

We love earning rewards and stickers in class! We have a ‘rainbow chart’ and also a ‘behaviour ladder’ in our classroom.

Year 1 children also earn Dojo Points in class. We can earn points for demonstrating our whole school learning behaviours: creativity, curiosity, independence, reflection, resilience and teamwork. Every time we are 'caught' using these learning behaviours we receive a Dojo point from the teachers. We can collect Dojo points to earn rewards.

Children have access to TTRS – the password for this can be found in their reading record.

For homework (in Year 1) spellings will go home every Friday, these are to be tested the Friday after. We encourage you to read at home with your child as much as possible and practice number bonds, doubling and counting in 2s, 5s and 10s.
