Year 1 - Starling

Welcome to Starling Class
Our Teacher is Miss Humphries, our Teaching Assistant is Mrs Phillips and Mrs Delafield works with us too!

For the Autumn Term 1 we have so many exciting topics for the children and staff, focussing on the topic ‘amazing me’ including:

 - Animals and humans: drawing and labelling key parts of the human body and knowing all about our senses.

- Writing sentences using full stops, capital letters and adjectives. Writing captions, labels and lists and reading familiar stories such as ‘Topsy and Tim’ and ‘Biff, Chip and Kipper.’

- Measuring our bodies and body parts accurately using rulers and tape measures.

– Learning about a healthy and varied diet. We will then use this knowledge to prepare our own healthy food dish!

- Creating a family tree.

- Drawing a self-portrait.

P.E. Lessons

Our PE sessions are on a Tuesday afternoon where the children will need to change into their PE kit in school. Please ensure these are clearly named.

All learning whilst you are at home can be found on the eschools login on the Beechwood website. Please message us and let us know what you have been learning.

Please also remember that your child can develop their skills by reading at home, numberTTRS at home, Reading Eggs and Spellodrome on the internet. We have found that the sites are fun and an excellent vehicle for learning! Children should also be learning their times tables as all children are expected to know each multiplication table (up to 12 x 12) by heart by the time they reach secondary school.

Behaviour and Class Dojo

In Class we have a ‘rainbow ladder’ and a ‘behaviour ladder’. We earn stickers, rewards and ClassDojo points (in Y1) for following our whole school rules of being ‘ready, respectful and safe.’

We love earning Dojo Points in class. We can earn points for demonstrating our whole school learning behaviours: creativity, curiosity, independence, reflection, resilience and teamwork. Every time we are 'caught' using these learning behaviours we receive a Dojo point from the teachers. We can collect Dojo points to earn rewards.

This year, Starling Class are really focusing on their reading skills. We will be reading, with an adult, in school at least twice a week. We will then be discussing the book, characters, our favourite parts and thinking about what might happen next.
